The H-1B is a nonimmigrant visa that allows U.S. companies to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations — roles that require at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent in a specific field. It is the primary visa category used by American companies to hire skilled professionals from abroad, particularly in technology, engineering, finance, medicine, and architecture.
H-1B visas are subject to an annual cap of 65,000 regular visas and 20,000 additional visas for workers with a U.S. master's degree or higher. Because demand consistently exceeds supply, USCIS conducts a lottery every year.
